I recently wrote an article describing how hard change is – by way of balance here’s one about how change is inevitable. Thanks for the idea Gav.
Change is Inevitable
Name something that can’t change in your life? Name something that has never changed in the past? Change is the nature of things – this is not just an abstract Buddhist philosophy but also a key to effective business practice. What’s the recession? Change. What’s marketing and sales all about – change? What do your customers want no matter what your business? Change – especially the ones who want things to stay the same – that would be a real change.
Nature doesn’t like things to stay the same – seasons come and go, ecosystems change, even continents drift appart. On the human level we will all snuff it sooner or later. The titles, social roles and possessions we have worked so hard for WILL be lost. We will die and then our children – if that order if we are lucky.
As a businessman I will doubtless not be doing exactly what I am doing now now in a year. If I am something will have gone wrong and I’ll be in trouble – more of the same NEVER works when things are always changing. Prediction and control are sad dangerous illusions with the speed of change as I see it. And no matter how well I do and riding the storm, sooner or later I will have nothing and be a nobody. Integration Training may last a year or another 1000, but one day it will be no more. I have nothing to loose when I think if it this way, so I might as well do what I love with integrity. What appears a depressing and nihilistic way to live is really the essence of freedom and fun.
So change is inevitable and often unpredictable. The questions for me become:
– How can I learn to learn and adapt quickly?
– Can I see which way things are heading before it’s too late?
– How can I accept with grace what happens when it does?
Change So What: Changes happens, better learn to go with the flow.
