Cheng Hsin is the most sophisticated martial art I have come across in 11 years of world travel and exploration, making my beloved aikido look crude by comparison. It can be classified as an internal martial art and was developed by Peter Ralston. I recently took a second trip to Wales to a day-long seminar by UK/Irish teacher Kevin Magee.
As the martial arts, welcome and food (!) was fantastic – cheers guys. I particularly enjoyed the “pressure/no pressure” competitive but non resistant sparing, the “advantage/disadvantage” game where you feel you’re venerability and take turns to pause and move as you would in sparing but with time to explore and the “butler” helping game. These and the techniques drew out the creative non-dogmatic principles of Cheng Hsin, and there was a lot I with psychological depth that I could use in my work.
This stuff really is the PhD of martial arts.
